Part 1 — Compactor Safety Checklist

A safety inspection for keeping a compactor in safe operating condition. The requirements below follow the safety framework in ANSI Z245.2 for stationary compactors. Anything marked as a problem here should be corrected before the machine goes back into normal service.

A · Warning Signs Present, Legible and Correct

Every access panel carries a caution sign warning not to remove the cover except for servicing, and directing the operator to turn the control panel key switch off and remove the key first

Every electrical device operating above 120V — control cabinet, motor, disconnect — carries a high voltage danger warning

Any opening a person could enter or reach into carries a keep-out caution

The hopper, chamber and chute carry a do-not-enter danger warning

All security doors carry a caution to keep the door closed

All feed openings carry a caution not to operate the compactor while feeding material

Signs are legible — not painted over, faded past reading, or covered by stickers Added

Direct-feed compactors with a loading height under 42 inches must have either (a) or (b):

(a) Deadman controls located so the operator cannot reach the loading zone pinch point while operating them

(b) A point-of-operation guard that prevents entry of hands, fingers or any part of the body into the point of operation; creates no pinch point of its own against moving or stationary parts; allows maximum visibility of the point of operation; is interlocked so the compactor cannot run with the guard removed; and is accessible for inspection and maintenance

Direct-feed compactors with automatic cycling have an access cover that closes off the opening, interlocked so automatic cycling will not function once the cover starts to open
