Your Compactor Stopped. Here's How to Tell What's Wrong.

Most compactors that “won’t run” have an electrical cause, not a hydraulic one. This guide lists the symptoms we actually get called for, what causes each one, what a store owner or property manager can safely check, and where that checking has to stop. Every item is marked with who is qualified to do the work — because a compactor control cabinet carries 480 volts and the hydraulic system holds pressure after the power is off.

Who Can Safely Do What

Every symptom on this page carries one of three labels. The label tells you where your own checking safely stops. This is not a liability disclaimer — it is the honest answer to a question facility managers ask us constantly:

Tier 1 · Site Check

Owner, manager, custodial staff

Nothing opens. No panel doors, no guards, no covers. Look, listen, read the gauge and the indicator lights, confirm the disconnect position, walk the chute. A flashlight is the only tool required.

Tier 1 · Site Check

In-house tech with LOTO training

Machine locked out and verified dead. Opens covers to inspect, checks oil level and condition, clears debris, resets an overload once, inspects hoses and hardware. Does not troubleshoot live circuits and does not open a pressurized hydraulic line.

Tier 1 · Site Check

Trained industrial service tech

Live troubleshooting on 480V three-phase, any work inside a pressurized or stored-energy hydraulic system, cylinder removal and replacement, valve and relief adjustment, PLC work, and all welding and cutting.

The two hazards that make a task Tier 3 no matter how simple it looks

480 volts, three phase. An arc flash inside a compactor control cabinet is a burn injury, not a shock. The control components inside that cabinet run on 120V or 24VDC — which is exactly why people open the door and get hurt. The 480V line side is right there beside them.

Stored hydraulic energy. A compactor parked with the ram out has a loaded cylinder and pressurized lines even with the motor off and locked out. Cracking a fitting “to see if there’s pressure still in it” is how people get injection injuries. Pressure is relieved deliberately and confirmed at the gauge before anything is opened.

The safety framework behind these tiers comes from ANSI Z245.2 (Stationary Compactors — Safety Requirements for Installation, Maintenance and Operation), OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 (Control of Hazardous Energy), and NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety in the Workplace). Welding and cutting on a building in Massachusetts falls under 527 CMR 1.00, Chapter 41.

The same symptom means different things on different machines. A slow cycle on a wet-waste self-contained unit points somewhere different than a slow cycle on a dry-cardboard stationary unit. Identify your style first.

Electrical & Control Problems

Before anything is opened, four things are worth confirming from outside the cabinet: the main disconnect is on, no emergency stop is latched in, the chute or access door is fully closed, and the machine is not simply still locked out from the last service call. Everything past that point requires a qualified technician.

PLC and control panel faults

Newer compactors run PLC control with an HMI screen. Older units run hardwired relay logic. Both are still in service across New England and they fail differently. A PLC gives you diagnostic information a relay panel never will — but when the PLC itself fails, a relay-logic tech is stuck.

Hydraulic Problems

A compactor’s hydraulic system fails in four recognizable patterns: it makes no pressure, it makes weak or slow pressure, it makes heat, or it leaks. Oil level and oil condition explain a large share of them and can be checked safely with the machine locked out. Everything past the reservoir is qualified-technician work.

Hot work permits in Massachusetts

Any chute or structural repair requiring welding or cutting on a building in Massachusetts requires a hot work permit issued by the local fire department under 527 CMR 1.00, Chapter 41. The person doing the work, the Permit Authorizing Individual, and the fire watch all need Massachusetts Hot Work Safety Training. We carry that certification and we handle the permit and the fire watch as part of the job — you do not need to find a separate welding contractor and coordinate the fire department yourself.

What’s Included in the Rental

The compactor sat 12 feet from the building and perpendicular to it, rather than parallel and tight. The chute had to run that full distance and drop roughly 5 feet from the bottom of the building’s trash door to reach the top of the compactor’s charge area.

That geometry puts a long, steep, unsupported span between the building and the machine — and every compactor cycle sends vibration back up it. Over time the three legs holding the chute bent, the support welds broke, and the chute was allowed to pull away from the wall by three inches or more.

What we did

We brought in a telehandler to support and reposition the chute, then reconstructed the legs with proper support and bolted them to concrete feet. We resealed the building-to-chute cavity with fire-rated foam and installed new pressure-treated boards to support the building-to-chute connection.

The lesson for anyone with a similar layout: a compactor set perpendicular to the building with a long extended chute and a steep drop is a structure that needs inspecting on a schedule, not a chute you can forget about. A three-inch gap at the wall did not appear overnight — it was measurable a long time before it became a repair.

A maintenance plan is more than an oil and filter change. It is a professional look over every part of your machine that typically causes problems — before it causes one.

What the technician is actually looking for

The part most PM visits skip

We schedule the inspection for just before the unit is due to be emptied, so the pressure and timing can be checked against a real full load rather than an empty chamber.

If the unit is not full when we arrive, we place a diagnostic tool between the couplings and cycle the machine. That tool lets us test the pressure switch settings directly instead of guessing at them.

The pressure switch is what tells your hauler the container is full. When it drifts, you either pay for pulls on half-empty containers or you overpack them until the door warps. It is worth testing properly.

An honest word about what PM does and does not do

A maintenance contract cannot guarantee you will never have a breakdown. What it does is find the issues that would otherwise have turned into an emergency call — and it puts a trained technician in front of your staff a few times a year, which is when most of the useful safety and operating conversations actually happen.

Extend equipment life

Quarterly, semi-annual or annual visits, matched to how hard the unit actually runs. A machine that cycles all day does not need the same schedule as an apartment unit that cycles twice.

Catch it while it is small

What should I check myself before calling for compactor service?

Confirm the main disconnect is on, no emergency stop button is pushed in, the access and chute doors are fully closed, and the container is properly seated and latched. Note whether the motor runs, whether the ram moves, and whether any indicator light is on. Do not open the control cabinet or any guard. That information alone often shortens the service call.

A running motor with a stationary ram points to the hydraulic side: a sheared pump coupling, a failed pump, oil below the pump suction, a closed suction valve left shut after service, a relief valve stuck open, or a directional valve that is not shifting. Oil level can be checked safely with the machine locked out; the rest requires a qualified technician.

No, unless that person is qualified for live electrical work under NFPA 70E and wearing arc-rated PPE. The line side of a compactor starter is typically 480 volts three-phase, and the low-voltage control components sit in the same enclosure. An arc flash inside that cabinet causes burn injuries. T&T Weber Hydraulic manufactures replacement cylinders domestically to the original bore, stroke, rod diameter, mounting and port configuration, which solves both the lead time and the obsolescence problem.
Same day when the compactor is empty on our arrival in the morning and a new cylinder is available — cylinders, hoses and pins replaced and the unit running before we leave. When requested, we can rebuild your cylinder, including a new rod, typically in three days from removal through install to running. We replace rather than rebuild whenever a replacement exists, because it is faster.
We take calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and respond within 2 hours. On an emergency, depending on travel, we can be on site in as little as 4 hours. A call early in the day usually gets a same-day response; a later call may be within 24 hours. Machines that are down take priority over machines that are running.
A PLC compactor runs its sequence in a programmable controller with a display that reports faults; a relay-logic compactor runs the same sequence through hardwired relays, timers and switches with no diagnostics at all. Both remain in service across New England. We service both, and upgrade relay panels to PLC control when the original components are no longer maintainable.
Reversed phase rotation is the most likely cause. When two of the three supply legs get swapped during panel, fuse or starter work, the motor turns backwards and the pump makes no pressure. The machine sounds completely normal and does nothing. Any compactor failure immediately following upstream electrical work should be checked for rotation first.
Yes. A relocation involves safely draining or securing the hydraulic system, electrical disconnection and reconnection by qualified personnel, new anchoring to an adequate slab, container guide and bollard placement, and re-commissioning.
